KNOXVILLE, Tenn. ββ Tennessee baseball released its official fall roster Thursday, one day before the Vols open fall practice. Tennessee is coming off a 38-22 season that ended at the NCAA Tournament’s Chapel Hill Regional.
Coach Josh Elander brought in the nation’s No. 1 newcomer class, according to Baseball America, a ranking that includes both high school signees and transfers. Elander met with the media Monday, and one of the topics was building chemistry with so many new faces.
“I think when we have a full calendar fall, our staff did a really good job of kind of mapping out, whether it be individual position, whether they go to a dinner or an off-field event, we have at least a couple things going on each month to get the guys together outside of baseball,” Elander said.
“We’re gonna try to play golf one day. That’ll be interesting. Some of those guys think they’re pretty good; most are not. But we’ll shoot some hoops over at TBA and some other spots. But again, that’s been a big focus, making sure to get the guys together.”
Elander also pointed to the extra work players have put in on their own and credited returners Trent Grindlinger, Stone Lawless and Blake Grimmer for setting the tone.
“But one thing that’s been really cool is that a lot of the freshmen and even the returners are at the field all the time, getting their work in,” Elander said. “We didn’t have lights for a portion of last fall, so now the guys can get their work in. It’s cool to be able to come back in the evening, do some recruiting events and see the guys on the field getting after it a little bit. So it’s been a really good group. I think it’s hats off to Trent and Stone and Blake Grimmer. They’ve done a great job of kind of connecting everybody.
“And one of my first messages at our first meeting was, we don’t have time to be the freshman class, the portal class, the returners. We are the Tennessee Volunteers. So I think our guys have really bought into that so far, and we’re starting to see some dividends there.”
