No. 1 Lady Vols Are Serious

Ever since the 2025 Women’s College World Series concluded, the collegiate softball world has looked for Texas and Texas Tech to be the best returning teams in 2026. While we all know that games have to be played, and there are still around 85 percent of this season to play, there looks to be some serious contention from the team in Knoxville, Tenn., known as the Tennessee Lady Vols.

I observed this team a few times in the fall, and the first thing that I looked for was the pitching situation other than Karlyn Pickens. Coach Karen Weekly told me then that she didn’t want Karlyn to carry the load that she did in 2025, and it seems that Erin Nuwer has stepped up to the challenge and become the next ace in the making for Tennessee.

In 20 innings pitched across six appearances with two starts, Nuwer has posted an insane 0.00 ERA with a WHIP of .40, an opponent batting average of .033, 24 strikeouts to six walks, and only two hits given to go along with a 5-0 record to start. Also, the Lady Vols have not started the season with cupcakes through 10 games. During that time, they have faced six teams in the top 25, including three in the top 10.

Karlyn Pickens’ numbers are just as fantastic, and the Lady Vols pitching staff as a whole has only allowed a total of three earned runs on 25 hits through 10 games, and a team ERA of 0.33, which is the best in the nation. That is a certain level of dominance that if kept even closely in the ballpark will go as one of the best pitching performances in the history of college softball.

The Tennessee offense is putting up runs as well, but what makes things much greater is if they are giving up minimal runs, it will take pressure off the offense to score a ton. However, we all know in this game average days will come, and this team has a complementary attack that could help the other side of the ball out.

The Lady Vols have three players in Alannah Leach, Sophia Knight, and Gabby Leach that bat .423 or better, and a few with .300 plus averages. This past weekend in Clearwater, they averaged 8.6 runs per game and posted an 8.2 run margin of victory. This offense knows how to come up with timely hits, and can pour on in an instant, like in the Florida State win. That shows the completeness and focus of this team early on in the season.

Like Weekly or any coach in the country will tell you, there is still much to improve and work on, but you can’t complain if you are a Vol fan with the way this season has begun for Tennessee. Tennessee has impressed everyone and is currently the No. 1 team in the nation across major softball polls.

Stay tuned and follow Mays Sports Media for more softball coverage this season.
