Tennessee Softball Remains Unanimous No. 1

It’s another week of unanimous No. 1 rankings for the Tennessee Lady Vols softball team. Coming off a sweep over LSU to begin SEC play, this team has shown the fabric of being a team destined for greater things in 2026.

Tennessee is led by a solid pitching staff, and this past weekend they showed to handle the load without ace Karlyn Pickens. Pickens is still day-to-day with an arm strain suffered in their midweek game vs. Belmont last week, and this staff stepped up in a big way in the SEC series sweep of LSU.

Erin Nuwer, Sage Mardjetko, and Maddi Rutan have taken this Tennessee staff to a new level this year. The ability for Karen Weekly to not worry with Karlyn Pickens on the side for now is a strength that most didn’t realize she had.

Led by Gabby Leach’s big weekend with a .600 batting average, three home runs, six RBI, that included the three-run walk-off win on Sunday, this Vols offense continues to come through in big moments as well. It takes runs to win, and they are doing what needs to be done to support the pitchers. Tennessee has outscored opponents 168-21 so far this season.

You can’t talk offense without a solid leadoff, and Sophia Knight is leading the way with slashing .527/.593/.608 with a team-leading 39 hits and 11-for-12 in stolen base attempts. Knight’s .527 batting average ranks ninth in the country in games played through Sunday. In a game where people pay to see the home run, you can never discount the importance of just getting on base, and Knight does that without issue.

Craig Snyder has done a great job with this team, and it is showing. Sure, they will have some innings or maybe even a game where things aren’t hitting just right, but that is softball and it’s life. Having said that, this team is never down and out. You have to bring it all seven innings, or they’ll catch you slipping.

Tennessee is back on the field for a couple of midweek games in the mid-state against Austin Peay and Lipscomb before heading to Starkville, Mississippi, this weekend for a series with the Bulldogs.
