Just a day after making the Dallas Cowboys’ initial 53-man roster, former Vol quarterback Joe Milton III has been released, per multiple reports.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the corresponding move for Dallas was picking up running back Emari Demercado off waivers.
The move surprised many. Milton had performed well during the preseason. He completed 29 of 43 passes for 378 yards with 3 touchdowns and no interceptions. Milton spoke to putting in the hard work all offseason to become a better version of himself.
According to ESPN’s Todd Archer, a source stated that the Cowboys did have some trade conversations regarding Milton before he made the 53-man roster on Sunday. If Milton clears waivers, Dallas could bring him back to the practice squad, but it’s not clear if they will.
This move makes Sam Howell the No. 2 on the depth chart behind Dak Prescott. Howell had just as good of a preseason as Milton did. He completed 27 of 40 passes for 314 yards and three touchdowns with one interception, and added a rushing touchdown. Milton will now look for another landing spot. That would be his third NFL team in three seasons, as he began with the New England Patriots, then Dallas.
