KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The 2026 season has been one of growth for the Tennessee football defense. Led by defensive coordinator Jim Knowles, this unit continues to take the steps to be reliable in Southeastern Conference play. A major part in the makeup is the front, and players from one end to the other have made plays.

One player in particular that started the season out with a first-play sack against Furman, and is coming off a career game against No. 1 Texas, is Tyree Weathersby. He set career highs last week with 2.5 sacks and 2.5 tackles for loss, and tied his career best with six tackles. Weathersby, who is a part of Tennessee’s 2026 football leadership council, has led by example on Saturdays and during the week.

When LEOs coach Andrew Jackson was asked what makes Weathersby so effective, his answer went beyond calling him a warrior through any moment. He described a student of the game who knows the little things matter.

“He’s embraced the details, a good stance, a good first step, reading sets,” Jackson said on Tuesday. “He’s always up here taking care of his body. He watches film, he comes in with answers, he comments, questions. So he’s just dialed in. His focus is unbelievable.”

Weathersby’s production against the Longhorns was part of a six-sack day for the Vols, and he isn’t the only one getting home. Ten different Tennessee players have recorded a sack this season. Asked what has allowed so many to contribute, Weathersby mentioned the selflessness of the group.

“Everybody is happy when somebody makes a play,” Weathersby said. “We are all playing for one another and not just to make plays out there. We are enjoying it together.”

Even after the performance against the nation’s top-ranked team, Weathersby carries the same mindset as his coaches, that the unit has more to do. They aren’t what they could be yet.

“Of course we’ve been doing good, but everybody still feels like we could be so much better,” Weathersby said, “which I agree with.”

There are some things the defense as a whole can continue to sharpen, one being third-down defense. Teams have converted 36 percent of those opportunities against Tennessee, which ranks 11th in the SEC and 62nd across the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). Tennessee’s opponent this weekend, the Auburn Tigers, has converted third downs 50 percent of the time this season, which is third-best in the SEC and 20th in the FBS.

The Tigers are also a team that is capable of making plays on offense. Quarterback Byrum Brown is mobile, and he leads the Tigers with 237 yards gained and three touchdowns on 62 carries this season. That is nothing new for the Vols defense. Tennessee has faced mobile quarterbacks a few times already this season, and it also sees Faizon Brandon in practice every day.

“Just taking the right angles and not letting him escape out the pocket,” Weathersby said, “that’s definitely something we do every day and focus on.”

Brown’s legs will be key to watch in third-and-manageable situations, especially since he’s had an up-and-down season through the air. He has thrown for 896 yards on 82 completions with six touchdowns and five interceptions, and a possible wet forecast for Saturday could make passing even tougher. Auburn’s offensive line has also allowed 3.5 sacks and 6.25 tackles for loss per game. On paper, the matchup favors Weathersby and the Vols front on Saturday.
