Tennessee softball head coach Karen Weekly landed a 2028 commitment from across the country. Infielder Sophia Galindo from Hollister High School in Hollister, Calif., announced her decision on Monday morning, Sept. 7. Galindo also plays for Suncats Jimenez 16u. She hit .417 with 10 home runs and a 1.559 OPS last season.
When Lady Vols head coach Karen Weekly extended the offer, Galindo was overcome with emotion. This is something she’s worked hard for, and a dream come true.
“This is something I’ve dreamed about for so long, and knowing I’d have the opportunity to compete at a program like Tennessee was hard to put into words,” Galindo told me. “I also couldn’t help but think about everything that went into getting me there, the hard work, sacrifices, my family, and everyone who believed in me. It was such an emotional moment, and I’m just so thankful it led me to Tennessee.”
Hollister, Calif., is roughly 2,400 miles from Knoxville, Tenn. A cross-country commitment takes real trust in who you’re pledging to. You also need to feel at home.
“I knew that if I was going to go far from home, I wanted to be surrounded by a strong community and a loving environment that would make that transition easier,” Galindo said.
“From camp, I immediately felt that closeness and family bond, and my official visit only solidified that feeling,” she said. “Coach Weekly, Coach Leach, Coach Megan, Coach E and the rest of the staff are all amazing people who genuinely care about their players’ development and success both on and off the field, as a person and a player.”
Galindo didn’t just go on what she felt on visits and at camp. She also did her homework to make sure things were real here in Knoxville.
“I heard nothing but positive things from current players, former players, and even girls who had transferred out,” she said. “Everyone talked about how much they loved the staff and the community.”
Galindo is a confident player with belief in her craft. She knows what her strengths are and where she needs to grow.
“Some of my biggest strengths are being a mentally tough player who can rise to tough situations and handle pressure,” Galindo explained. “I have a really strong bat and a good glove, and I’m also a strong communicator.
“But what I think really separates me is my mental toughness and my work ethic. Moving forward, I want to continue growing as a player, but especially as an amazing teammate and role model both on and off the field, which is something UT puts a huge emphasis on.”
